SPF 30 vs SPF 50: What Actually Matters Most?

One of the conversations I love having with clients is around SPF because there’s so much confusion and marketing around it.

And one thing that often surprises people?

SPF 50 isn’t necessarily “better”. It’s just slightly stronger.

SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays.
SPF 50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays.

That’s it.

The difference between the two is actually much smaller than most people realise.

What Matters More Than the SPF Number

The biggest issue we see isn’t usually that someone is using the “wrong” SPF number.

It’s:

  • not applying enough

  • not reapplying throughout the day

  • forgetting UVA protection

  • inconsistent use

Because even SPF 50 does not block 100% of UV rays.

Sun protection is about consistency, not just numbers.

This is also why we spend so much time researching and carefully selecting the SPF products we stock at A’Veen. We want to make choosing safe, supportive sun protection easier for our clients without the overwhelm.

Chemical vs Mineral SPF

Another important conversation we often have in clinic is the difference between chemical and mineral SPF.

If you are currently using a chemical SPF 50, especially daily, it may be worth reconsidering what you’re applying to your skin.

Some chemical sunscreen filters can contribute to:

  • redness

  • irritation

  • burning or stinging

  • sensitivity

  • reactive skin responses

And beyond the skin itself, certain chemical UV filters have also been studied for their potential endocrine-disrupting effects, meaning they may interfere with hormone signalling within the body.

This is especially important to consider when applying SPF regularly to children.

Why We Often Recommend Mineral SPF

Mineral SPF works differently to chemical SPF.

Rather than absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, mineral SPF sits on the skin and helps physically reflect UV exposure away from the skin.

For many sensitive, reactive or acne-prone skins, mineral SPF can feel significantly calmer and more supportive.

At A’Veen, we’re passionate about helping clients choose SPF options that support not only skin protection, but overall skin health too.

SPF Is One Part of Healthy Skin

Sun protection is incredibly important, but healthy skin is never just about one product.

Protecting the skin barrier, reducing inflammation, supporting hydration and choosing ingredients that work with your skin all play an important role in long-term skin health.
