Fragrance, Skin Sensitivity & The Hidden Inflammation We Often Overlook
One of the biggest things we assess when someone walks into A’Veen with sensitised, reactive or inflamed skin… is fragrance.
Not because fragrance automatically makes a product “bad”, but because for many skins, it can quietly become part of the problem.
Fragrance is often added to skincare purely for the experience. We’ve almost been conditioned to believe that if something smells good, it must be working or feel luxurious. I see it all the time — someone tests a product and instantly smells the back of their hand.
But often, the skins struggling the most with redness, inflammation, acne or rosacea are also the people surrounded by fragrance all day long.
Perfume.
Scented skincare.
Candles burning constantly.
Room sprays.
Laundry fragrance.
Scented body lotion.
Lip care.
Car air fresheners.
It becomes layer upon layer upon layer.
And while one fragranced product on its own may not necessarily cause an issue, the cumulative load can become overwhelming for both the skin and the body.
Why Fragrance Can Be Problematic for the Skin
In corneotherapy, we focus heavily on reducing unnecessary inflammation and protecting the skin barrier.
The challenge with fragrance is that irritation is not always immediate or obvious.
Sometimes the skin slowly becomes more sensitised over time through repeated exposure.
We commonly see fragrance contributing to:
skin sensitisation
impaired barrier function
redness and inflammation
dehydration
stinging or itching
acne flare-ups
reactive skin behaviour
ongoing irritation in already compromised skin
When the skin barrier is already impaired, it often becomes far more vulnerable to irritation and inflammation triggers that it may have tolerated previously.
Looking Beyond the Skin
For some people, the conversation around fragrance goes beyond the skin itself.
Certain fragrance compounds and phthalates used within perfumes and fragranced products have been studied for their potential endocrine-disrupting effects, meaning they may interfere with hormone signalling within the body.
This doesn’t mean every fragranced product is toxic.
And it certainly doesn’t mean using perfume occasionally will ruin your skin or hormones.
But when we zoom out and look at the modern world, the exposure becomes significant.
Candles.
Haircare.
Laundry products.
Perfume.
Room sprays.
Skincare.
Body products.
Every single day.
This is something I often explain as your “toxin bucket”.
Our bodies are constantly working to process and detoxify what we’re exposed to, but there’s only so much they can keep up with at one time. Eventually, the bucket begins to overflow and for many people, the skin is one of the first places we start seeing that reflected.
Reducing unnecessary fragrance exposure where possible can significantly reduce the inflammatory load on both the skin and body.
This Is Why Barrier Repair Matters So Much
One thing I’ll always continue resharing is how quickly skin can respond when we stop fighting it and start supporting it properly.
When inflamed, compromised skin is given the right environment to heal, it often responds beautifully.
And sometimes, surprisingly quickly.
This before and after result was achieved in just two days using a simple, barrier-supportive approach focused entirely on calming and repairing the skin rather than aggressively treating it.
Prologic is a true corneotherapy range, meaning every ingredient is intentionally designed to protect, support and repair the skin barrier rather than disrupt or strip it down.
There are:
no unnecessary fragrance
no silicones
no colourings
no unnecessary fillers
no harsh preservatives
no ingredients without purpose
Just skin-identical ingredients the skin recognises and knows how to utilise properly.
Because “clean skincare” alone isn’t always enough.
If ingredients aren’t communicating with the skin correctly or supporting proper skin function, they’re simply not doing the job we need them to do.
With Prologic, every ingredient has a purpose and a role within the skin — and that’s where real skin changes begin.
These beautiful results were achieved by our skin friend Lucy from @skinbylucyau using:
Pre-Cleanse Oil
Microfibre Cloth
Probiotic Serum
Omega 3 Treatment Oil
Of course, every skin journey is unique and not everyone will respond the same way or within the same timeframe.
What works for someone else’s skin is not necessarily what your skin needs.
Your skin has its own ecosystem, its own history and its own unique set of needs.
That’s why personalised support and guidance from a qualified skin professional is so important.
